What Dimensional Weight Means
Dimensional weight is a pricing method that considers the package size. FedEx explains that a shipment can be charged by actual weight or dimensional weight, whichever is greater. UPS also uses dimensional weight when package size is large relative to actual weight.
What To Measure
- Actual scale weight of the packed box.
- Length, width, and height of the final outer package.
- Carrier service level and destination ZIP code.
- Any residential, signature, declared value, pickup, or delivery services.
How To Control Cost
Use the smallest safe box, avoid extra empty space, and compare services after entering real dimensions. A better package fit can make a meaningful difference when your team ships every day.
ParcelSwift Tip
Load your own rates, enter the real box size, then compare options. That is the fastest way to see which service makes sense before a label is created.
